Bio:
Mauricio is a Costa Rican visual artist. He obtained his Master of Fine Arts in Parsons The New School for Design, NY, NY. He also holds a Master in Visual Arts and Education from the University of Barcelona and he is a Licentiate and Bachelor in Fine Arts with Emphasis in Printmaking from the University of Costa Rica.
Through his art practice he interrogates the possibilities of contemporary printmaking and other processes, exploring divisions between categories, concepts and territories. His work looks into the relations between economic and aesthetic value and new forms of exchange, as well as the complexities of regional divisions and boundaries. Among other themes he explores the tensions between drawing and architecture, the analog versus the digital and different approaches and ideas around print media. Since 2020 he has been the founder and director of Casa 49 in San José, Costa Rica. It is a center for the exploration of ideas, creative initiatives, curatorial and pedagogical processes, artistic research and social practice.
